Surfing Barbados

The Soup Bowl. Barbados’ location as the most easterly island in the Caribbean places the island’s west coast directly in line for receiving the deep Atlantic swells built over thousands of miles of open ocean. The Soup Bowl, perfectly located at the small fishing village of Bathsheba, is the spot in Barbados that experiences this great surf, with consistent, big rollers. Just a few, short years ago, the Soup Bowl was known only by locals. Today, the Soup Bowl is the site of both local and international surfing championships and is emerging as one of the premier surfing spots in the Caribbean.

South Point. A quick drive to the fishing village of Oistins and on through the Atlantic Shores residential community will get you to two of my favorite breaks: Freights Bay and South Point. Freights Bay has a (typically) smallish break, but well formed, long and calm. South Point often breaks with a chest to head-high wave and can provide some of the best intermediate surfing on the island.

Freights Bay BreakThe West Coast. The west coast of Barbados faces the normally calm waters of the Caribbean. This area certainly has some of the most beautiful beaches on the island and, for the majority of the year, provides tourists with an idyllic, sun-soaked vacation experience. But every so often (and never often enough), the West Coast will break with deep, glassy swells. From the north West coast to the southern end, you’ll find Maycocks, Mullins, Tropicana, Sandy Lane, Church Point and Batts Rock as likely good surf spots.
